Helen McCrory was a British actress famously known for her roles as Narcissa Malfoy in the final three Harry Potter films, and Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders. Helen has starred in many other roles with excellent performance, earning herself an OBE medal - Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Helen attended IST during her primary school years when her family lived in Tanzania.
Helen McCory passed away on April 16th, 2021 due to cancer. The IST community is deeply saddened by this great loss and IST would like to pass our sincere condolences to her family.
Although Helen was at IST for a few years only, it was more than enough time to make life-changing memories. One of these memories is shared with a former classmate of hers, Surekha (Satyam) Dangoor - Class of 1986.
Surekha had just joined IST in 4th grade in January 1977. Before that, she had spent her whole life in India. In that year, her father, working for the Commonwealth Secretariat was assigned to Tanzania. As she was joining in the middle of the school year, she was a little nervous and was not sure what to expect.
On her first day, during recess, she was left alone as all her classmates went about their routine. That is until Helen showed up. As Surekha was standing idly outside the classroom, not knowing what to do, Helen approached her, and very pleasantly and matter-of-factly, she said "My name is Helen, and you will be spending Break with me". Of course, Surekha said the only acceptable answer, Okay!
Helen proceeded to give Surekha a tour of the whole IST campus, showing her where the gym, pool, music room, and all other important places and how to find them.
This simple gesture helped Surekha gain her footing and become comfortable in a new learning environment.
Surekha still remembers the moment, and reshares this story with her daughter and husband!
We are saddened to have lost a great alumna, but we are comforted by the memories she has left behind. May she rest in peace.
