From the Vice Principals' Desks

(Tony Breese is away for a CIS Accrediation visit. This week, we are featuring news from Maggie Hewitt and Glenn Davies, Vice Principals.)

Dear Parents,

There is a lot of excitement in the air this morning as we write, in anticipation of the first ever Twiga Juggling Show. Juggling has been a wonderful addition to IST elementary this year.

This morning we were able to enjoy the Grade 1 assembly which focused on ways to reduce our impact on the environment. The grade 1 students boldly sang their Reduce - Reuse - Recycle message to all those who were listening.

This week the grade 5 students have been out on a number of field trips throughout the city as they have inquired into various places of worship within their final unit of inquiry. This has enabled the students to consider the range of values and perspectives different groups within our community may hold.

The final EPN meeting was held for this academic year. The Elementary admin team was able to take this opportunity to thank the EPN for the incredible work they have engaged in throughout the year to support learning within the elementary school. Acknowledgment was made for the EC/KG Fun Day, International Day, Santa Surprise, Friendship Duka, and IST's Got Talent.

Grade 2 have been learning about space exploration and Professor Jiwaji was invited for an evening of star gazing with the grade 2 students. The students looked through Professor Jiwaji's telescope to find the craters on the moon, and to view the moons around Jupiter.

Last Friday's outdoor classroom day created much excitement as students had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of outdoor learning experiences on the elementary campus. Amongst other things, these included a campfire in the KG, stepping stones using the big tree that fell recently in the KG Quad, and tent pitching in the Tembo Quad. Just prior to these activities, the grade 12 graduation class of 2017/18 walked through the elementary campus, meeting classes from each grade level and passing The Torch to the grade 5 students in honour of their completion of elementary school.

Finally, on Friday the elementary students had the final Read-In for school year. This is always a wonderful opportunity for students across the school to mingle and read together.
