From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents,

It's been another busy week in Elementary School. The Grade 5 had their inter-house athletics on Monday. Grade 4 had their turn this morning. On Wednesday after school over 150 students and parents enjoyed a one off juggling presentation from world famous French juggler Vincent de Lavenere. Our own students impressed Vincent with their own skills and then the audience was privileged to witness an amazing display of expertise.

We have had two parent workshops this week (Supporting English Language Learners and Understanding Measures of Academic Progress - MAP). Results of MAP should have come home today via pupil post for Grade 3-5 students. Last week we held a workshop on school communications. Here is a summary of the helpful feedback from the 25 parents who were present at this workshop:

  • Review the procedure related to communication from the nurses to parents following injury or illness at school to ensure messages are clear.
  • Make sure the telephone numbers used by the school are all operational * and use one school number to call parents from.
  • Greater consistency between classes/grades on amount of postings on Seesaw
  • Allow students to upload and share on Seesaw relevant experiences outside of school with approval from class teacher
  • Weekly Grade newsletter to include some information about specialist classes
  • When child is absent from school parent to inform class teacher and Sarah Daniel (sdaniel@istafrica.com)
  • Provide opportunity for community responsibility to younger students
  • More detailed written reports

It's a great addition to have a community room on campus. For those of you with EC children who have older children in school please feel free to use the room with your child between 1-1.40pm whilst you wait for school to finish for the older children. A selection of toys and games will be put in the room in due course. The room will be used for EPN meetings, parents workshops as well as being another large meeting space for students/teachers.

From the Library

Dear Students and Parents,

The beginning of the year has been busy in the library with more new and exciting events coming up:

Grade 2/Grade 3 Pajama Party!

It is that time of year again! Are you ready for another night of reading, hot chocolate, PJ's, stuffed toys and blankets? Grade 2 and Grade 3 are invited to join us on Friday night, October 26th, at 7 pm, for the first pajama party of the year! Moms and Dads, we need your help volunteering to read in the classrooms. Students will arrive at school at 6:45 PM and head to classrooms with snacks at 7:00 for reading time. More info to come. If you are interested in reading that evening, please sign up HERE. Thanks, and see you soon!

Whole School Mother Tongue Read In

All parents, grandparents, and siblings are invited to join us on the covered court on Monday, October 29, at 7:20 am, for our Mother Tongue Read In. Last year, we had children and parents reading in nearly 30 different languages. Feel free to bring books from home, borrow books from the home language section of the library, or just come to read with your children. It is a magical morning and we look forward to seeing you there!

Mother Tongue Reading During Library Lessons

During International Week, we would like to invite parents to come in to read to their children's homeroom classes in the mother or father tongue. This is a great way to share language and culture with our students. We are so fortunate to attend a school like IST with the enormous amount of diversity that we have. Come share your language with our students. Sign up to visit a library class HERE! We can't wait to have you.
