Secondary News

From the Principal's Desk
Blair this week talks about reflection and metacognition: the simple definition of metacognition is that it's "thinking about thinking". The process of reflection is an important strategy in the learning process. That's why we have included it in the Approaches to Learning that we give students feedback on and it is embedded in the criteria for many of the MYP subjects. This week Ananya and Bas are sharing their reflection on the GISS conference that they attended in Kenya. Read the full report below.

Ongoing Project Supporting Refugees
Donation boxes for refugees are here again. This time you can find specific boxes labeled with items needed, upstairs in the common room. As we are getting closer to the end of the school year and people are leaving, it is always nice to donate stuff rather than throw them away! Clothes, shoes, books, toys, bags are all welcome for all ages, basically anything that you believe refugees from Burundi and Syria can use! Also this time the donation boxes will given to refugees in Dar es Salaam as I am collaborating on a project with REDESO. Last year we managed to collect much more than expected and it really helped out the refugees in camps all over Tanzania. If you have any questions please contact me (marina-kaleb@istafrica.com) or Artemis (artemis-mantheakis@istafrica.com).

From the Counseling Office
This week the Counseling Office shares information about the upcoming Canadian University Fair, a visit from the University of Edinburgh and resources for Grade 11 parents about planning for university admission.

A Message from the Ecovengers
Do you have any extra cutlery? Ecovengers is looking for any donations of metal cutlery for the canteens usage, in the aim of reducing plastic usage and making the school environmentally friendly. If you are interested in helping us there will be a drop off box at the secondary campus gate by Margaret starting 29th January. Your donation will be highly appreciated!

Daily Bulletin for Secondary Students
At IST Secondary, we want students to develop the skills of time management, planning and organising. The school shares a Daily Bulletin with students to help them keep track of important upcoming events and deadlines. To help parents support their children as they develop these skills, we are also sharing a link to the same Daily Bulletin with parents through this article for quick reference.
