Student Voice: Students as Advocates in Their Own Learning
IST Secondary hosted a panel discussion on Tuesday, October 10th bringing together students, teachers and advocates for youth empowerment to discussion and learn from each other about how best to overcome issues of trust, inclusion, dialogue, power and participation in enabling students to have their voices heard.

Fund A Child brings to you the first annual IST FUN FAIR!
Saturday, November 18th, 10am to 4pm, IST Secondary. Come in with your families and friends to enjoy good food, shop around, play games, attend workshops and have a great time. Fund a Child is a student-run Take Action Tuesday group that raises funds to support and empower local youth. We have organized this event to raise funds for the Chipua Fund-a-Child organisation right here in our own community.

Baker Book Fair - Orders have been delayed
Baker Book Fair orders have been delayed. They are on their way from England, but won't clear customs in time for the October break. Hopefully they will be waiting for students upon their return. Sorry for any inconvenience.

IST Community Choir
The IST Community Choir is starting up again! If you enjoy singing and would like to take part in a relaxed choir please come and join us. We are a group of IST parents and teachers who meet every Monday evening for the love of singing. We will begin our rehearsals on Monday the 30th October at 7.00pm and will be preparing for a small Christmas concert in early December.

Santa Surprise Project 2017: Assisted by the EPN and SPN
Many of you are already aware of the Santa Surprise initiative begun by Tertia Hayes in 2014. IST parents have been contributing to this initiative for a couple of years, but for those who are only hearing about this now this project is assisted by the SPN and EPN. Out of 283 children, people have already signed up to give a bag to 238 kids. Only 45 more to go! Email if you'd like to donate a gift bag. Read below for complete details.

Facilities Holiday Hours - Swimming Pools and Libraries
Don't miss your chance to visit the IST libraries during the October break! For the Community Hours for the Elementary and Secondary Swimming Pools please see the article inside for details. Be sure to show your school ID card if you are coming on campus. Note all facilities are closed on Saturday, October 14th in observance of the national holiday.

IGNITE Music Festival 2017: In Pictures
IST Secondary students Simran Pattel, Jesse Gyan and Mayenziwe Mseleku were the amazing organizers behind this year's IGNITE Music Festival which was held in the Secondary Courtyard on Saturday, October 7th. The event was incredible, featuring performances from students from both Elementary and Secondary. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights.

Teen Girls Organization (TGO): Women's Health Day at IST Secondary
On Saturday, 7th October, IST's Teen Girls Organisation (TGO) hosted their first Women's Health Day. A hundred girls from local schools were invited, and the day was packed with presentations and workshops from guest speakers. The schools which participated were Bethsaida Orphans' Girls Secondary School, Zanaki Secondary School and Kawe Mkwamani Secondary School. The workshops were led by TGO members as well as professionals such as Ms. Malina Patel, Dr. Belia Klaassen and nurses from the IST Clinic and IST Secondary.


Elementary News

From the Principal's Desk
This week, Tony is wishing all IST Families an enjoyable break, with classes resuming on Wednesday October 25. When students return, there will a lot happening, as always, at IST Elementary. Tony provides a summary.

Counselor's Corner
Last week, the IST Elementary counselors presented to parents on Child Protection, including the school's safe touch program, creating a safe environment, personal safety rules, library resources, and responding to disclosure. In case you weren't able to attend, you can see that presentation through the link below. Lynn Kogelmann (EC-2nd Grade) and Carole Kessler (3rd-5th Grades) welcome you to touch base to ask questions or further discuss anytime.

Grade 2 and 3 Pajama Party: In Pictures
On Friday, October 6th, students from Grades 2 and 3 (along with their parents and some fantastic Elementary staff volunteers) took over the Elementary Campus for a fun, just-over-an-hour long pajama party and read-in. Check out the highlights below.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning
Please join us on Wednesday 25th October from 6-7pm in the Secondary Library for a parent session on MYP Math for the 21st Century: using inquiry and conceptually-based teaching. The session will be led by Ellen Alquist, an internationally recognized expert in inquiry learning, who will be spending the week at IST working with teachers on Mathematics teaching and learning.

Joe Seavey, IST Secondary's Athletics and Activities Coordinator, provides a quick reference to athletic events coming up, including dates for the ISSEA events, ASA News and Moshi Sports Weekend.

At IST Secondary, we want students to develop the skills of time management, planning and organising. The school shares a Daily Bulletin with students to help them keep track of important upcoming events and deadlines. Rotary Dar Marathon: October 14th
