The world is changing, with emerging societal and geopolitical issues sprouting up ever so frequently. It is becoming more important for students to learn about these issues early on so they can cope with them later on in life.
It is in the spirit of this concern that the first Model UN was organized in 1968 at The American School of The Hague. This conference became the starting point of The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Foundation. THIMUN now boasts thousands of member from hundreds of schools across the world, including IST. As of 2019, there are over 40 conferences planned in the future.
This year, IST got to attend AMMUN's 13th model UN conference organized by Amman Baccalaureate School. The THIMUN affiliated conference brought together students from all over the world to submit, debate, and vote on real issues across the world.
The conference helped students understand how the world works, and most importantly, grow their network of friends while building up the confidence to stand up for and defend their ideals.
This year there was an additional, much less bureaucratic surprise, a visit to Petra. Learning about and experiencing first hand a piece of ancient history was a much welcome respite for students.
IST strives to ensure such activities are available to students every year to foster learning and growth.
