The International School of Tanganyika produces students who excel academically, play an influential role in the community and are exceptional athletes.

Below are just a few of the many awards IST students have been awarded.

AISA Service Award

The AISA Service Award was presented to the Teen Girls Organization (TGO) in 2016, for their work organizing a successful career fair, as well as their work to conduct Computer Literacy Workshops.

TGO is a student-led initiative founded about five years ago by students at IST Secondary. The goals of the group are to:

  • Empower female teens
  • Promote gender equality and reduce disparities in wealth and power through the empowerment of the local community and female teens
  • Promote the exchange of beliefs, ideas and opinions through cultural interactions

The group has put on many events that have had a large impact in the community; some of the events include a Women’s Health Day, a career fair and a Tanzanian university fair. The group is also planning various other long-term projects such as providing a scholarship opportunity to attend university and donating computers to a high school.

IST Diploma Scholarship Programme and Yale Young Global Scholars Programme

Bahati won two awards while at IST. The first led her into the school’s IB Diploma Programme, when she received the Diploma Programme scholarship from Jangwani Girls’ School - a local school in Dar es Salaam - in 2016.

As soon as Bahati enrolled at IST, she started making a big impact and was awarded a full scholarship to attend the respected Yale Young Global Scholars Programme in 2017. The programme offers six sessions on topics ranging from science, to international affairs, to global security.

Bahati was one of three Tanzanians in the session, which included more than 200 students from around the world.

Overall Project Award for Science Hack Day

The Overall Project Award for Science Hack Day was presented to IST students Prem and Irfan in 2016. According to the organizers of the event, a science hack is a clever and unique modification or solution to a problem.

Prem and Irfan, who teamed up with a student from Loyola High School, won this award for their design of a walking stick, which they called a Smart Stick. The walking stick is designed for blind people; it uses ultrasonic sensors to help the user navigate open space.

Prem was also awarded the Young Scientist Prize.

Shout out from UNHCR

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) interviewed IST Secondary student Marina for her work with refugees. Marina, recognizing the dire need for action, used her access to resources and support to help.

Marina began with a Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) Project where she organized collection drives for goods such as clothes and books, items desperately needed by Burundian refugees in Dar es Salaam. Her project was a success and she decided to take her work to the next level by using her IST Take Action Tuesdays (TAT) to tutor refugee youths in English and Kiswahili so that when they were allowed to attend Tanzanian government schools, they would be ready to learn.

She also wrote a proposal to receive funds through Round Square Anniversary Challenge to support the work she was doing and won.

CAS Award winners Class of 2017

The Class of 2017 saw two CAS Award winners for two different projects. Harsh won for his work as part of the leadership team in Fund-a-Child. According to IST’s CAS Coordinator, Deanne Milne, Harsh exhibited dedication, commitment and an incredible amount of grace and thoughtfulness. According to his MUN Advisor, Mr. Flynn, Harsh is kind, caring and thoughtful. He has often faced adversity and has done so admirably. The legacy left by Harsh will endure for many years.

The other winner of the CAS Award for the Class of 2017 was Johann for his work learning to powerlift and organizing a group at the Global Issues Service Summit. Johann set shot put records both for IST and International Schools of Southern and Eastern Africa (ISSEA). He was captain of the team for the 2016 season. According to Milne, Johann exemplified the two main aspects of leadership by having amazing character and by showing a willingness to challenge oneself.

IST produces students who are aware, curious, ready for any challenge and always willing to help. With regards to athletics, IST has coaches who use their expertise to inspire student athletes to challenge themselves, never settle and work together for a common goal. Academically, IST offers programs such as CAS, which gives students the chance to understand how they can help the community, make a plan and actually follow through.

As evident above, IST provides all opportunities necessary for students to be recognized for their unbelievable accomplishments and the skills needed to succeed.

We love to rank things – to sort events, services, and people using subjective and often arbitrary measures.  There is no better example of this than the rankings of US college basketball teams as they gear up for, and compete in, the national championship tournament each March.
