How Diversity on Campuses Help Children Excel in Business

diversity at international school of tanganyika

We live in a diverse world and no matter what country you call home or what school you attend you will witness the many ways in which people are unique, be it the faculty or the student body. It’s that diversity that opens an individual’s eyes to see just how big our world is.

Witnessing diversity from the point of a young age onwards allows children to become open-minded, it gives them stronger communication skills and allows them to become knowledgeable inquirers, three essential skills necessary for a successful career in business.

Diversity Amongst IST Students and Faculty

The International School of Tanganyika (IST) prides itself in its diversity; with regards to its faculty, there are over 100 teachers from more than 15 countries. Not only does this allow for a student: teacher ratio of 8:1, it also guarantees students a range of teaching techniques and ideas.

Within the student body, of the 424 Elementary students and the 465 Secondary students, there are 66 different nationalities represented. This gives all students the chance to witness different cultures, traditions and languages, an invaluable opportunity.

IST capitalizes on this opportunity by teaching about issues that have local, national and global significance, thereby helping students develop an understanding of human commonalities.

The school then explores these commonalities together from multiple perspectives. Being able to share your opinion, but also sit back and hear other perspectives increases students’ awareness and sensitivity to the experiences of others in both the local and international community. Possessing a keen international perspective is key to a successful career in business.

An IST alumnus quoted how the diversity at IST is something he felt helped him thrive.

Promoting International-Mindedness at IST

International-Mindedness is one of IST’s Teaching and Learning Philosophies. The goal is to aid students in developing a sense of identity both as global and as national citizens.

One of the ways in which IST achieves this goal is to stimulate students’ curiosity about the world and help them become committed to solving its problems.

Students are also required to learn other languages - in addition to English - as part of the IST curriculum. Graduating Secondary School multilingual will not only help a student get into a notable university or college, it will also broaden their career opportunities.

IST’s students:

  • Fulfill their potential and improve the world
  • Act kindly, fairly and responsibly, as they understand the diversity of people and cultures
  • Become global leaders and help to educate like-minded individuals

Given the diversity amongst the faculty and the student body as a whole and the fact that IST actively promotes International-Mindedness as part of their curriculum, students are taught unique lessons that will help pave their way to a successful business career.
