Alumni Spotlight: Highlighting Tanzanian Communities Through Photography

On Friday, August 7th, Alliance Française de Dar es Salaam opened their doors after a long while. Welcoming art lovers to see Watu Wa Tanzania, a photography exhibition by Rania Nasser, showcasing the stories of different communities she had come across her travels throughout the country. A significant milestone for Rania, it's a culmination of years of community outreach efforts.

After leaving IST in 2019, Rania and her family moved outside the country. There she was surprised at the kind of questions her new peers threw at her. The view they had towards Africa and her home country, Tanzania, did not reconcile with hers. Promising herself to take action, as she would have learned in her CAS class, Rania decided she would tell the story of Africa, it's culture, and it's people.

Working with Alliance Française, Rania organized the Watu Wa Tanzania exhibition to showcase the vibrant communities from different parts of Tanzania she had visited. The event was open to the public, starting at 10 am to 05 pm, featuring plenty of time to enjoy the art. Honored guests: Hon Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, Ambassador to France, H.E. Frederic Clavier, Ms. Devotha Mdachi - Managing Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board, and Ms. Barreto - Board Director of Alliance Française helped launch the exhibition which lasted several days.

Rania is no stranger to community-focused ventures. At the height of the pandemic, she started an initiative to deliver free masks where needed. Beginning as a simple gesture, it grew into something of its own. Inspired by the vibrancy and diversity of the people of her home country, she's excited to discover more ways to tell their stories.
