Counselor's Corner

Last week, the IST Elementary counselors presented to parents on Child Protection, including the school's safe touch program, creating a safe environment, personal safety rules, library resources, and responding to disclosure. In case you weren't able to attend, you can see that presentation through the link below. On Friday, October 6th, students from Grades 2 and 3 (along with their parents and some fantastic Elementary staff volunteers) took over the Elementary Campus for a fun, just-over-an-hour long pajama party and read-in. Check out the highlights below.

IGNITE Music Festival 2017: In Pictures

IST Secondary students Simran Pattel, Jesse Gyan and Mayenziwe Mseleku were the amazing organizers behind this year's IGNITE Music Festival which was held in the Secondary Courtyard on Saturday, October 7th. The event was incredible, featuring performances from students from both Elementary and Secondary. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights.

Santa Surprise Project 2017: Assisted by the EPN and SPN

Many of you are already aware of the Santa Surprise initiative begun by Tertia Hayes in 2014. IST parents have been contributing to this initiative for a couple of years, but for those who are only hearing about this now this project is assisted by the SPN and EPN. Out of 283 children, people have already signed up to give a bag to 238 kids. Only 45 more to go! Email santasurprisetz@gmail.com if you'd like to donate a gift bag. Read below for complete details.

Student Voice: Students as Advocates in Their Own Learning

IST Secondary hosted a panel discussion on Tuesday, October 10th bringing together students, teachers and advocates for youth empowerment to discussion and learn from each other about how best to overcome issues of trust, inclusion, dialogue, power and participation in enabling students to have their voices heard.

Discovery Learning Alliance and IST

In 2015, the Discovery Learning Alliance (http://www.discoverylearningalliance.org) commissioned a documentary about children's rights. The documentary is aimed at young children and recently won two prizes at the New York Festival with the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI). The UNDPI award is for a film that "best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations." Chris Morgan produced the documentary and a few IST students are featured in the opening sequence >> https://vimeo.com/202338151. The film was released last year on DVD and made available to schools. It's not yet publicly available online but Chris has shared the link with us.

IGNITE Music Festival 2017

The IST community is invited to the second IGNITE Music Festival to be held in the IST Secondary Courtyard on Saturday the 7th of October from 6-8pm. Come and enjoy a variety of performances from both Elementary and Secondary students as well as the school groups (bands and choirs) from both campuses.

An Invitation to Join Us: Student Voice

Have you ever felt it was difficult to have your voice heard? Or have you had a time when you felt it was difficult to speak up for your rights? An important aspect of creating a vibrant learning community is enabling students with the tools and structures to have their voice be heard when it comes to ensuring they are achieving the learning outcomes they desire. Join us for an in depth discussion being hosted at IST Secondary on Tuesday, October 10th from 4 to 6pm. We will bring together thought leaders from around Tanzania as well as from within the IST Community to learn from each other about how to overcome issues of trust, inclusion, dialogue, power and participation in enabling students to have their voices heard. Director's Coffee

Please join Dr. Mark Hardeman for his first Director's Coffee of the year on October 11th at 7:30 am. This presentation will take place on the Secondary Campus in the Learning Commons Space (D Block). Topics to be discussed will include school-wide goals, enrollment updates, and projections for 2018-19. Please note that this coffee is open to all IST families (Elementary and Secondary parents). Mark also provides the chance for parents who were not able to attend the World Cafes to contribute views on how the school is doing related to our mission.

IST's Got Talent is an EPN-organized platform for your child, no matter which age or grade, to show us his or her talent, irrespective of level of expertise or type of talent. We welcome solo or group acts, musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, mime-artists, live DJ's etc. etc. etc. Sign up is now open through the link above.
