A WARM WELCOME TO THE IST COMMUNITY Karibu sana! (you are most welcome, in Swahili)
Are you new to Dar? Do you have children enrolling as new students at IST? If so, you are bound to have a host of questions swirling through your mind. As parents of students at IST, we understand your situation and have crossed many of the same bridges. The IST Secondary Parent Network (SPN), together with the Principal, Board, Administration, and Faculty of IST, extends a warm welcome to the community and an offer of support to make your transition as smooth as possible.
IST encourages a collaborative approach to the student-school-family relationship. This approach enhances the overall social integration, emotional wellbeing and academic success of your child both inside and outside the classroom. The Secondary Parent Network (SPN) is what you, as parents, make it. In recent years, there have been monthly meetings as well as a variety of activities. These have included early-morning circular walks around the Masaki peninsula starting and ending at school; informal get-togethers for parents in the evening at Slipway; coffee mornings for newcomers and other interested parents; and the very enjoyable teachers’ appreciation night in May.
SPN meetings are normally held on a Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. in Room B4 on the Secondary campus. Scheduled meetings are posted on the IST Secondary campus calendar which can be found on the IST website here >>. Reminders are also posted in the weekly publication called the Secondary Spotlight.
During SPN meetings, parents discuss various issues relating to school such as academics, health and safety, CAS activities, social support and events.
If you use Face Book, the SPN has a secure group page that provides information, meeting minutes, discussion items and connects members of the parent community. You may log on to your Facebook page and then go to the following URL to request to become a member. Your request for membership will be approved by one of the group administrators.
