IST was proud to welcome back this week one of IST’s former Headmasters, Mr. Harry Potts and his wife Monica. Harry served as IST’s Headmaster through a particularly turbulent period in IST’s history (1976-1979). During his time, IST was plagued by the dramatic downturn of the Tanzanian economy, a much-contended admissions policy, a nasty spate of robberies in teacher’ flats and an outbreak of cholera that closed down the school for two weeks.
However, Harry was primarily responsible for the plans to open up the Secondary Campus in Masaki. During his time, the new Secondary School got underway with four classrooms, a science lab, a store room, an office, a staffroom and paved and grassed areas for students to play. Harry was also a key player in ‘greening’ the Masaki campus and had many trees and shrubs planted on planned planting days. He was delighted to be able to visit after an absence from Tanzania of more than thirty years to see the progress of the school and he was impressed by the growth of the school and all of the changes. He spent some time speaking to teachers and students alike and commented that upon entering the Secondary campus he felt had returned ‘home’.
