Apply For Admissions

Step 1: Review Application Guide

Students applying to the Secondary School (Grades 6-12) will be required to sit placement tests in English and Maths as part of the application process. Final acceptance and admission to IST is based upon a review of all available information. In some cases, a personal interview may be required. It is advisable to carry a copy of the academic records with you when you come to Dar es Salaam just in case your records were delayed in the mail. In some cases we may also want to call your child’s previous school to gather additional information. Since some classes and grades fill early, you are urged to complete the application process as soon as possible.

IST can receive applications at any time for the 2021-2022 school year. Completed applications will be reviewed at the time they are received and parents will be notified soon thereafter about whether their child has been accepted in principle. We are unable to confirm space availability until we have completed the re-enrolment exercise. This allows current students the first chance to re-enrol. For those enrolling mid year, acceptance decisions are usually made more quickly unless your child/ren are applying for a Grade where a wait list exists.

If you have any questions, please contact the Admissions Office (admissions@istafrica.com) or by phone (Elementary +255 684 228882/3 Ext. 302; Secondary +255 787 997778 Ext. 143).

Step 3: Review of Application and Admissions Assessments

Your application will be reviewed by one of two admissions teams at IST. The teams are comprised of the Principal and the Director of Admissions or the Admissions Officer. Admission is dependent on the applicant meeting the IST’s admission criteria in terms of academic performance, behaviour and ability to benefit from our programmes.

Language

IST provides a comprehensive English as Additional Language (EAL) programme throughout the Elementary years and most of the Secondary years. Students can be admitted to the Elementary School irrespective of their knowledge of and experience with the English language, as long as they meet the other admission criteria. At the Secondary School the curricular demands of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programmes make a reasonable command of the English language a pre-requisite for admission to these programmes.

Special Learning Needs

Admission of children with special learning needs - IST admits all students who, in the school’s judgment, can benefit from its programmes and services and whose needs can be met by the school. IST accepts students with moderate as well as mild learning support needs. IST also considers, on a case by case basis, the admission of students who require intense support. However, the school will only admit students for whom we are able to provide suitable resources and support.

Please read more here (Section 6.1, beginning on page 8) about IST's admissions policies.

Step 4: Admission Decision

We realize that your family's plans are significantly affected by the decisions made by school's such as IST. Once the school has made a decision, we will let you know as soon as possible. Decisions about admission fall into one of four categories:

Accepted

The Admissions Director or Officer will let you know via email and your family will receive an offer of admission. The offer of admission should be signed and returned as soon as possible. You will also receive student health forms that should be completed and returned as well as information about how to complete the enrolment deposit. The enrolment deposit is to be paid within two weeks of the offer of admission in order to confirm your child's seat.

Denied

In some cases, IST is not able to provide a programme that matches an individual student's needs. In such cases, the decision for denying admissions will be provided in the school's response to the application. In case an application is denied, IST refunds a portion of the application fee (USD $350).

Wait listed

If a student is accepted but there are no openings in the appropriate grade level, then the family may choose to have their child's name placed on the waiting list. Admissions from the waiting list are based on the Admission Priority and the Date of Application.

Deferred

If an applicant has been accepted but chooses to defer his/her enrolment to the following academic year, they are placed on the applicant list for the next year and will need to provide updated and satisfactory academic reports and Confidential School Reports from the preceding school year. For example, if an applicant is accepted for the 2018-19 school year but wishes to defer enrolment until the 2019-20 school year, then they are placed on the applicant list for the 2019-20 year but will need to submit updated reports from the school where the child was enrolled for the 2018-19 year.
