Secondary Curriculum: International Baccalaureate

Why We Teach the International Baccalaureate Programme

We teach the IB programme because we believe in its mission statement. “The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.” (IBO Mission Statement 2007)

We also believe in the broadness of the IB programme. These subjects are explained in the links on the left. Central to the programme are Theory of Knowledge (TOK) which challenges students to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and areas of knowledge, and to consider the role knowledge plays in a global society; CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) which encourages students to develop in areas outside the school; and the extended essay, a piece of original research on a topic of interest.
