Extended studies programme - ESP week 2007

Grade 9 and 10 ESP: Hisoric Kilwa

“Kilwa is amongst the most beautiful of cities and elegantly built..”
Ibon Battita(1331)

“Kilwa of all the places I know in the world has the best port and the fairest land that can be. In it are lions, deer, antelopes, partridges, quail, and nightingales and many kinds of birds and sweet oranges and pomegranates, lemons, green vegetables, figs of the land, coconuts and yams and marvelous meats and fishes and very good water from wells”
Dom Farncisco d’Almeida (1503)

The Kilwa students set off up country on Tuesday having spent a day researching the history, growth and decline of the cities at Kilwa-Kisiwani and Songo-Mnara. The object of the trip and the investigation was to collect enough information so as to convince the UN that these areas should maintain the distinction of being a World Heritage Site. They worked in groups researching trade/tourism, history, natural environment and the impact and meaning of the site for the people of Kilwa. Each day involved a field trip, lunch, followed by work on presentations both written and oral. Beach volleyball, football and swimming in the pool were enjoyed in the attractive grounds of Kilwa Ruins Lodge. On Thursday evening the presentation was made to local people the staff and the guests of Kilwa Lodge. On Friday they were up early for the return journey to Dar.
