Community Service Activities

Mtoni Community Service Project

Every week, the I.S.T. students work with mentally and physically handicapped children, of all ages, in the I.S.T. swimming pool as a kind of hydrotherapy, as well as playing sports on the hard court area and on the field.

Working with the children in the pool serves different purposes. In the water, the physically handicapped children experience a kind of mobility that they do not otherwise have. In all cases, learning to swim and float gives the children self-confidence and a lot of satisfaction knowing they have achieved something.

Student Insight:

"Working with the Mtoni children is definitely an experience!! Of course, there are the bad days when you have a fussy child or one the children is sick in the pool, but there are also days when you come home and feel really good about yourself because you made a child smile and laugh. A day like that cancel out all the bad ones!!"
