Eyesight for all
An estimated 45 million people worldwide are blind. In 2000, IST’s first ever CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) project aimed at improving the eyesight of several people who are unable to afford treatment, began. Not only has this project changed the lives of a few thousand local Tanzanians, but has received the 2002 Robert Blackburn Memorial Award for the best IB CAS Project in the world.
By giving free eye treatment and check-ups around Tanzania, the activity helps several thousand people to simply pick up a newspaper and read. It is estimated that 90% of the world’s blind live in developing countries. By living in Tanzania, the club sets up eye camps locally. With one eye camp having already been a success on January 30th 2005, the activity has had a major impact on the community. Stationed at Pugu, the activity attracted around 160 people who came and got their eyes checked. Following this, the team is set to organize surgeries for those who need it.
With the goal of setting up three eye camps in and around Dar es Salaam, Eyesight-4-All truly helps to make a difference.
