Community Service
As an IB World School, and one in a developing country, the concept of Community and Service is adopted enthusiastically by students and staff. On any given afternoon students from all levels can be found with visiting community groups in the pool, on the courts or in the art rooms. They can also be found around Dar visiting places such as orphanages, the Cancer Hospital, or nursery schools.
Key Characteristics of I.S.T. Community Service Projects
We will manage all projects taking place within I.S.T.’s Community Service Programme so that they confirm to the following characteristics:
1. They offer shared benefits and experiences for the I.S.T. student and other community members involved.
2. They will be planned to ensure mutual respect can develop between both participants.
3. They will be meaningful to both parties and this quality will be sustained over time.
4. Students will be prepared for the project to ensure they are aware of its personal and cultural significance as well as its relevance in the broader context.
5. Projects will be planned so that they offer progressive experiences for students and make increasingly complex demands upon them as they pass through the school.
6. Ownership of projects will become increasingly devolved to students and they will be given increasing opportunities to exercise and develop leadership.
7. Projects will arise naturally from the curriculum and the IB framework at I.S.T. will provide structured opportunities for community involvement.
8. Projects will be planned so that opportunities exist for students to develop the key attitudes of: appreciation, creativity, independence commitment, curiosity, integrity, confidence, empathy, respect, cooperation and enthusiasm.
9. Taken collectively, projects will establish an empowering and developmental relationship between I.S.T. and the community with which it interacts.
10. The whole Community Service Programme at I.S.T. will be planned so that it becomes integral to the life of the school and involves large numbers of students and staff.
Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) for IB diploma
The IB Diploma and Certificate years at I.S.T. include some challenging and exciting times for an individual to develop and grow academically and experientially. It is up to the individual to develop and put together a challenging and interesting program which is acceptable to I.S.T. and the IB program. CAS is short for creativity, action and service and is a program of learning known as Experiential Education. With CAS, students try out some of what they have learned in the classroom and expand on it or even find out about something new altogether.
CAS implies a learning about the world, society and one's self. Creativity is where students get to use their imagination to solve problems or design solutions and to express one's self through performance and the arts. Action has to do with physical activity, sports and work that requires a physical exertion. Service can mean involvement and leadership in the community service projects taking place around I.S.T. or of a student's own making. This is a separate part of IB CAS, which allows students to host their own activities. Service projects are beneficial to other people or the environment and to one's self.
