INDEPENDENT CAS PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

An independent project is any project that you plan and carry out which is not an established I.S.T. project and listed in the I.S.T. Activities Schedule that comes out at the beginning of every term. Independent Projects need to be well thought out, planned and written up as a proposal and submitted to the CAS Supervisor for approval before you may claim any CAS credit. While planning independent projects, remember that CAS activities should involve the social dimension and group work as much as possible. At the completion of all CAS activities over two years, a majority should have been spent in activities where the student works cooperatively with other people.

Type your proposal using the guidelines below and print off a copy for yourself to refer back to. Please number the points of your proposal 1 to 6 following the questions and statements below. You may just copy and paste each point on to your proposal for ease.

Fully describe your proposed project or activity and include a schedule of when you will be working on it weekly and for how long.

Identify your On-Site Supervisor, who they are, their phone number and any other appropriate contact information. They must be approved by the CAS Coordinator and may be contacted by him and the IST Independent CAS Supervising Teacher.

Which aspects of Creativity, Action or Service will this activity include? How will it qualify as experiential education? See the qualifying questions on pages 5 and 16 in your CAS book.

What are your goals for the activity or project? Include both goals for personal growth and what the activity as a whole will accomplish. In identifying your personal goals refer to the Performance Criteria listed and described on page 20 of your CAS Book.

Specify which Performance Criteria from page 20 or your CAS Book you plan to work on in this project or activity. Choose as many criteria as fit naturally. Clearly explain what exactly you plan to do to demonstrate each one. What will your Supervisors and the CAS Coordinator be able to see you doing as evidence that you are meeting the performance criteria you have chosen?

Is there any other important information that you want to be considered in this proposal?

Email the proposal to the CAS Coordinator with a subject heading of CAS Proposal.

Make an appointment at the CAS Office to see the coordinator. You may not start claiming time on this project until it has been approved and you have met with the Independent CAS Project Supervising Teacher.

Don’t forget to reflect in your CAS book weekly and meet with the Independent CAS Supervisor weekly to discuss your progress and sign your book next to the signature of your On-Site Supervisor.
